As a writer: A reader slips into your mind, experiencing
your moment, through the imagery you create. You are the artist. The
pictures you paint, using forms of Haiku
and Tanka, express a moment in time, an occasion or a specific experience.
Haiku is written in 3 lines using syllables of
5-7-5. An expression of nature, life, emotion, beauty, pain, we evoke
passion and heartbreak, love and every other universal emotion. Haiku is
written using only 17 syllables.
Tanka are 31-syllable poems that have been the
most popular form of poetry in Japan for at least 1300 years. As a form of
poetry, tanka is older than haiku. Tanka poems celebrate a moment in time
or an experience communicated in concise, harmonic form. Tanka differs from
Haiku in its style of expression and in its form.
In Japanese, tanka is often written in one
straight line, but in English and other languages, the lines are usually divided
into five syllabic units of 5-7-5-7-7. Usually, each line consists of one
image or idea. In ideal tanka, the five lines often flow seamlessly
into one thought.
Haiku and Tanka are unique and challenging,
rewarding writings that take time to learn and master. There are specific
rules to follow, with some acceptable variations for creating your intricate art
work. We are here for pleasure and entertainment. We don't critique;
we are here to share, nurture and enjoy.
